COOKERY SCHOOL
The Ashburton Cookery School is a well admired building in the area, receiving praise for its modern design that is sensitive to the local Dartmoor heritage.
BRIEF
We were asked to provide a full construction service to knock-down an old car showroom, and replace it with a new purpose built cookery school.
WORK
This was a substantial project requiring us to liase with multiple stakeholders to deliver the modern architectural design that satisfied the Dartmoor planning authority, and gave a quality finish for the clients. Since the original building was a car forecourt with petrol pump, we commissioned a full ground survey to ensure the site met building regulations. Once this was achieved we undertook a managed demolition of the existing site, recycling materials wherever possible.
New foundations were laid, and building work began in Autumn 2008. Working with local stone and granite, this timber frame design was constructed to be as energy efficient as possible. In fact, the building is so well insulated and makes use of heat transfer from the training kitchens, there is no requirement for central heating in the building.
The building required the installation of a complex extraction and heat recovery system. Throughout the build, we project managed all trades to ensure we met the deadline. We worked closely with both the tenant and landlord to ensure the fitout met an exceptional standard of finish and snagging, and even provided services for bespoke built reception desks.
OUTCOME
The Ashburton Cookery School is a well admired building in the area, receiving praise for its modern design that is sensitive to the local Dartmoor heritage. The construction received a sustainability award from Dartmoor Partnership in recognition of the effort to use recycled materials during the construction, and the effectiveness of the energy saving design.
